Do you know how to maintain a wood burning stove?

A wood burning stove is a smart home investment. Sure, it may cost a little, but you have something that you can enjoy for the rest of your life. Or do you? The thing is that if you don’t care for your wood burner, you won’t be able to get the best of it.  The log burner won’t function properly, not to mention that it can let you down when you need it the most. You can’t afford to neglect a log burning stove. If you don’t know how to maintain your appliance in tip-top condition, then you should better continue reading and find out.

Don’t burn just about anything in the stove

So, you have a wood burning stove. Good for you! This heater is all you need in order to keep your home warm and cosy. As the name clearly suggests, you should only stack wood in the stove. Anything else is forbidden. Don’t even think about throwing in things like trash or artificial logs. Why? Because you risk starting a chimney fire. What you need to understand is that wood burners are fuelled only by wood. Anything else can block the pipes and result in a disaster. So, even if you have things that you would like to get rid of, you should better throw them in the garbage bin. Their place is not in the wood burning stove.

Clean inside and outside the wood burning stove

Modern wood stoves are built to last, but this doesn’t mean that you have no responsibility whatsoever. It’s important for you to clean inside and outside of the log burner. When it comes to the inside the stove, you have to make sure to clean the ashes and release the pressure from the bricks. You can’t even imagine how dirty the stove can get inside, so it’s a good idea not to wear your best clothes. When it comes to cleaning the outside of the stove, you need to wipe the surfaces with vinegar or a cleaning solution. What is the point of doing all this? you ask. Well, you can identify problems on time. Imagine the following situation: you’re cleaning the inside of the wood burner and you see some cracks. You can have them repaired immediately.

Make sure to inspect the gaskets

One of the most important tasks that you have is checking the gaskets. Your home appliance will have several gaskets and it’s important to check each and every one of them. If they are worn, then they have to be replaced, otherwise, they will cause problems. Gaskets become worn over time, so if you’ve had the wood burning stove for some time, you might want to inspect it carefully. The last thing that you want is to have problems. If a fire starts, it can destroy your home.

The bottom line is that modern wood stoves are very intelligent appliances. Yet, if they are not properly taken care of, they can cause trouble. Therefore, respect the manufacturer’s work and properly maintain the stove.
